Javier Castle Museum
Castillo de Javier
31411 Javier
The
Castle, which dates back to the 10th century, underwent
major architectural restoration in the 1950’s and later became a
museum in 1986. In addition to the interest it holds as a defence
bastion and residence of various influential Navarre families (the
Aznárez, the Artieda and the Jaso-Azpilicueta since the 16th
century), the castle also conserves numerous works of art and
historical documents. The works include a collection of Spanish
paintings from the 15th to 20th century
(Murillo, Coello, Carreño, Maella, B.Bécquer, Lucas, R. Madrazo
and Salaverria) and a 19th century collection of
Japanese Kakemonos or wall hangings, with scenes of the life of St
Francisco Javier. Also worthy of mention is the 16th
century polychrome painted alabaster altarpiece depicting the
Adoration of the Magi; the 18th century Flemish
encaustic (wax) painting representing the agony of St Francisco
Javier and the 14th century carving of the Miraculous
Christ surrounded by mural paintings representing the strange case
of the Dance of Death.
